LIGHTHOUSES AND MAINE COAST
If you like lighthouses, rocky coastlines, and secluded beaches, Maine is your destination. On your Maine vacation, plan to visit the more than 60 lighthouses along the stunning Down East peninsula. We suggest visiting Marshall Point Lighthouse south of Camden and Rockland close to the village of Port Clyde. Marshall Point Lighthouse, where scenes from the famous movie Forrest Gump starring Tom Hanks were filmed, is worth the drive.
Port Clyde is a great little town set on a scenic portion of the Maine coast. Stop at a small country store on the way to the lighthouse to buy a lobster roll or a Maine Whoopie Pie. Visit Owlshead Light Station near Birch Point State Park and enjoy a few hours on the beach. Driving back north, visit the Rockland Breakwater Light and the lighthouse museum. In Camden, Curtis Island Light guards the entrance to the harbor, best viewed from the bay.
